November is Mountain Manna Month
Mountain Manna is a project of the United Methodist Church in Julian. The project began one Thanksgiving when the church collected goods and prepared baskets for needy families in the area. What became apparent was that these families needed food every day, week and month of the year, and not just on the holidays. The church wanted to expand the program to provide food on a monthly basis. Funds to support the program now come from grants, fundraisers and donations from individuals. The church eventually partnered with Julian Woman’s Club.
On the 4th Saturday of each month, food is distributed to low income and needy families that live in and around Julian. There are often several hundred families that participate and receive food, toiletries and items for children’s amusement. For the Thanksgiving and Christmas distributions, a turkey is distributed to each family, along with canned and dried foods.
