INFO FOR VOCATIONAL / COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

Education beyond high school has become relevant in the 21st century, and necessary to secure employment, build careers and improve quality of life. Each year, the Julian Woman’s Club awards scholarships to graduates of the Julian High School District (including home-schooled graduates) to assist them in achieving their career goals and increasing their opportunity for success. We also offer scholarships for adults residing in the Julian area who wish to return/attend college or a vocational or technical school.

High school applicants must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. We are looking for individuals who wish to pursue education in a specific vocation that may or may not require a college degree. These vocations include but are not limited to: Nursing aide, Paramedic, Dental hygienist or assistant, Pharmacy tech, Veterinary tech, Firefighter, General Automotive, Cosmetology and Chef.

High school winners will be announced at the Julian High School Awards Ceremony and invited to attend the September meeting of the Julian Woman’s Club to share their plans. Adult winner will be notified personally and also invited to attend the first Wednesday of September meeting.

The number of scholarships is limited and therefore it is awarded through a competitive process. Applicants who demonstrate a particular skill or goal that will lead to successful completion of a technical or vocational program will be considered.

First Responder Scholarships are available rear-round. Apply online at any time.

What is a “First Responder” and who can become one?

First responders include Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), Paramedics, Fire Fighters and Law Enforcement Officers. Careers in any of these fields are within reach and can provide secure employment and benefits such as health insurance, vacations and pensions. These careers are great for individuals who do not want careers that require four or more years of college. These careers are a perfect fit for individuals who want work that involves physical activity and learning on the job.

The first step to becoming an EMT, Paramedic or Firefighter is to obtain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. CPR courses are available from a wide range of providers and the cost is minimal (under $100) and takes less than a day of training.

EMT. The next step is to enroll in an EMT program. Popular EMT programs are available at Palomar Community College, Southwestern Community College, Miramar Community College and National University. The course usually takes 12 weeks and the tuition ranges from $1,000 to $1,500. Once completed, a range of jobs become immediately available in ambulance service and medical offices;  salaries range from $20 to $50 per hour.

Firefighter. Palomar College offers a Firefighter I Academy. The cost of the course ranges from $2,500 to $3,000, takes one-semester and the only prerequisite is EMT certification. Salaries begin at $30,000 per year and go up as you gain experience or additional education and training.
