SUMMARY:November is Mountain Manna Month
DESCRIPTION:Mountain Manna is a project of the United Methodist Church in Julian. The project began one Thanksgiving when the church collected goods and prepared baskets for needy families in the area. What became apparent was that these families needed food every day\, week and month of the year\, and not just on the holidays. The church wanted to expand the program to provide food on a monthly basis. Funds to support the program now come from grants\, fundraisers and donations from individuals. The church eventually partnered with Julian Woman’s Club. \nOn the 4th Saturday of each month\, food is distributed to low income and needy families that live in and around Julian. There are often several hundred families that participate and receive food\, toiletries and items for children’s amusement. For the Thanksgiving and Christmas distributions\, a turkey is distributed to each family\, along with canned and dried foods.

SUMMARY:April is Paper for Pines Month (no more Pennies)
DESCRIPTION:The Penny Pines Program was initiated in California in 1941. It started small\, under the sponsorship of the San Francisco Sportswomen’s Association in 1941.  To date\, 59 years later\, those pennies have amounted to well over 1 million dollars\, and the program is a statewide conservation project supported by numerous individuals and organizations.  Over the years\, individuals\, community organizations\, and groups of all sizes have participating in the Penny Pines Program. Garden clubs\, Women’s Clubs\, youth groups\, and schools have all cooperated to help keep California’s forests green and growing. A minimum donation of $68.00 from the Club may be made to a specific National Forest. \nInitially\, members contributed loose coins as their contribution. To make donations easier to handle\, we request paper money donations.

DESCRIPTION:Julian Old Fashioned Country Fair – 11th Annual Apple Pie Contest \nDate:  September 21\, 2018 \nTime:  Deliver entries between 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon.  Judging at 1:00 p.m. \nWhere:  Julian Woman’s Club\, 2607 C Street\, Julian \nSponsored by:  Julian Chamber of Commerce and Julian Woman’s Club \nAward winners notified by phone that afternoon.  They will be requested to appear on stage at the Country Fair on Saturday\, September 22.  First and Second place winners will receive prize money at that time. \nCash prizes:  1st prize – $200\, 2nd prize – $100 \nOther prizes:  Honorable Mention. \nRules: \n1.  Pie entries must be delivered to the Julian Woman’s Club between 10:30 and noon on Friday\, September 21\, 2018. \n2.  Entry and recipe forms must accompany pie or may be filled out at the Clubhouse.  Recipe forms must include all ingredients. \n3.  Only 1 entry per family. \n4.  Pie ingredients must include apples but may also include other fruits. \n5.  Pies must be homemade.  No store-bought entries. \n6.  Plates\, pans\, or dishes cannot be returned. \n7.  After judging left over pieces of pie will be sold at Country Fair. \n8.  Judging will be based on following criteria: \na.  Above rules are followed. \nb.  Taste/texture of crust and filling\, presentation\, and creativity. \nc.  Judging will be anonymous and done on a point system. \nd.  Four judges from local bakeries and restaurants will preside. \nFor further information call:  760-525-8139  or  760-765-0832 \n

SUMMARY:Wildflower Show - Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:The Wildflower Show is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm from May 4th to May 7th\, 2017. It is located in the lower level of the Julian Town Hall (corner of Highway 78/79 and Main Street). \nThe Julian Wildflower Show has been an historical event for over 90 years. Because of Julian’s mountain valley location\, bordering a national forest and close to the Anza-Borrego State Park\, we have 855 species of plants within 25 miles of town\, many of which were used for health and healing by Native Americans.  The Wildflower Show is meant to educate club members\, local residents\, out-of-town visitors and children about the botanical wealth of Julian and its vicinity. \nWith permission from landowners\, club members spent two days gathering wildflowers from five plant zones. The wildflowers are displayed in the Julian Town Hall for four days. The flowers are arranged on tables representing the different geographical areas and plant zones in which they are picked. Display cards provide the name of the plant and describe uses of the various plants by Native Americans. A club member is present throughout the show to answer questions and share a book she created that illustrates 857 local plants she personally identified.
